Philosophy

The National Policy on Education (2014 Edition), the goals provided under Higher Education shall be to:

a. Contribute to national development through high level relevant manpower train;

b. Develop and inculcate proper values for the survival of the individual and society;

c. Develop the intellectual capability of individuals to understand and appreciate their local and external environments;

d. Acquire both physical and intellectual skills which will enable individuals to be self-reliant and useful members of the society;

e. Promote and encourage scholarship and community service;

f. Forge and cement national unity;

g. Promote national and international understanding and interaction.

Tertiary Educational institutions shall pursue these goals through:

a. Teaching;

b. Research and development;

c. Virile staff development programmes;

d. Generation and dissemination of knowledge;

e. Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES);

f. Maintenance of minimum educational standards through appropriate agencies;

g. Inter-institutional co-operation;

h. Dedicated services to the community through extra-mural and extension services.

Given the above, the Philosophy of the Bachelor of Library and Information Science programme is to educate, train as well as produce competent information professionals who will implement and manage information technology-related projects not only in libraries, but also in such related projects as Information Communication Technology (ICT).

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of Library and Information Science include:

i. To identify information needs of the academic body of knowledge which will enable Librarians face future changes and challenges in the information technology society

ii. To train and produce qualified Librarians who will man the ever information explosion and increasing number of libraries and other information institutions;

iii. To prepare well dedicated Librarians and Information Scientists who will serve as catalysts for the rapid development of information institutions in Nigeria, Africa and the world all over

iv. To impart on the students, the full concept of information literacy as well as opportunity for advancement of those who already have Certificates in Librarianship

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Four-year programme

The admission requirements for a four-year programme in the Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS) is five credit passes including English Language and Mathematics at not more than two sittings at the SSCE/GCE/NECO or its equivalent.
The subjects for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) are English Language and any other three Arts or Social Sciences or Sciences.

Three-year programme (Direct entry)

The admission requirements for the three-year programme are as follows:

i. Diploma in Library and Information Science, with at least Credit pass from a recognized institution plus five credit passes at SSCE/GCE/NECO ordinary level including English Language and Mathematics at not more than two sittings

ii. Pass in at least two subjects at the “A” level credit passes in English Language and at least one other Arts subject. At least credit or merit in English and any other Social Science subject.

iii. Pass at credit level in at least two subjects in the NCE with SSCE/GCE/NECO credit or its equivalent in at least three other subjects including English Language and Mathematics.
